My apologies to those dying to find more out about what's been going on, I can safely say not too much has passed. I've been fairly good, in case my readers have been wondering, and I'm going to be posting my blog on Facebook to get more publicity and readers. Maybe that will make me write more, who knows. In any case, that's all I have for now. I've got bratwurst to eat, Virgil's to knock back, and a tree to decorate.

One year older, one year more awesome

It has occurred to me that I turn 23 tomorrow, and I should probably celebrate. In case you're wondering where I've been, school has taken control. I live on campus now, though a slight error on my part led to me moving into the Broadway building, a slightly more expensive, but all around nicer and larger living space. My roommate is one of my friends from PCC, and things are going well with that. I haven't gotten a chance to get pictures, as I don't have a camera. Maybe if someone's really nice and gets me one I can get on that. Overall, I've been busy, and I've been doing pretty well. I should have a post up over the weekend if anything good comes up, though things are pretty normal right now.

Con Report and Relocation

Greetings folks, it's Robot Collector again.

As summer winds down to a close, I feel it is important to mention a lot of what's been going on lately. I've been preparing for my senior year at PSU, and this has included setting up student housing. Already signed the contract and put down the deposit a while ago, so by the 19th of September I'll be moving into the Ondine building on campus. It's a fantastic location, right on 6th Avenue, and only a block from where my classes are. It's a rather exciting new venture, and I'll be pleased to get everything settled there/

I got back from Kumoricon yesterday, which was a real blast. Made up for last year and really left a good impression. While there weren't any robots to be collected, I still had a good time. I'm going to post my con report on animesecrets.org first, as they're helping me with the editing as well, and when it's up I'll provide a link.

That's all for now, stay tuned.

Better, Faster, Stronger

After braving the whirlwind of PSU's spring term, your intrepid Robot Collector is back with good news. Daddy's got a brand new machine, and it's slick, pretty, and excellent. The ASUS EEE PC T101MT, one of the latest and greatest netbooks from their EEE PC line. I haven't gotten around to actually snapping any photos, but I assure you she's a beaut. With a 10.1 inch screen that flips over the keyboard to become a multitouch-capable tablet complete with a sweet, telescoping the stylus, it's hard not to love it.

I've named the machine SOLARIS, which stands for Spec Ops Logistical Army Recon Information Systems. I like to assign acronyms to my computers like that. For instance, my desktop is called OCEAN: Operational Covert Entry Attack Network. It's a fun little quirk of mine. Anyway, I wanted to bring you all up to speed on things.

Pics to arrive soon, though they'll probably be stock pics. Also, I'm going to upload my report on Akihabara as soon as it's all fixed up. One thing I forgot to mention was my amazing trip to Japan. This is mainly due to school at the time, and all the excitement of packing, planning, and actually being there. I didn't have much down time to actually report, and many of the readers (you know who you are) already knew that I was over there. I did, however, write up a post on Akihabara that I sent over to an interesting little anime site called Anime Secrets, which I am a reporter for. Check them out at anime-secrets.net, if you're into that kind of thing.

Hello 2010

Robot Collector here, speaking to you from the new decade of the 21st century. I'm back at PSU working on my history major, and enjoying life as a university student as usual. Even more, I am enjoying the killer pulled pork sandwich in front of me, which is one of my weaknesses. Speaking of which, those looking for a damn good pulled pork sandwich, go to Bunk Sandwiches in Portland on SE Morrison, great place.

I know I haven't updated in a while, but that's merely because it takes time to really pick and choose the right thing to write about. I prefer to have a particularly striking or relevant item to write about, something fresh in my mind. I will attempt to increase my output this year.

More robots and robot reviews to come, stay tuned...

Battle Stations Online

Your friendly neighborhood Robot Collector's been through a bit of a revamp, folks. As of two days ago, I installed Windows 7 on my main machine, and she's running excellently. The Aeroglass feature isn't too bad, really. Very shiny and slick, with translucent windows and a whole lot of polish it seems. I've heard from everyone else who uses it that they love it, with only minor issues with Steam (Online game client for the laymen out there). Overall, it's a great OS.

Anyway, I feel that I've neglected the collecting aspect, that is to say, all the wicked figures I've gotten since the start of the blog, so I'll give some links and a list now of what I have amassed.

From Sakuracon, I got a model of my favorite mobile suit from the United Century Gundam universe, Sazabi. Char Aznable's personal Psycommu mobile suit, and it packs a beam shotrifle. At least, that's what the box says.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 201px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_x-xPfGntKls/SvRVFvRvYhI/AAAAAAAAACc/HvOy7OuiqLQ/s320/mg_sazabi_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401035410202649106" />

The next figures I've gotten are official Godzilla figures. They're both of Gigan, one of my favorite Godzilla monsters of all time. University life is excellent, I can tell you that much. Right in the heart of downtown, much closer to my place of residence, and the people are better. I'm a junior, seeing as I was able to transfer every single one of my credits over, making it so the only classes I need are for my history degree. Being a history major's fun, really. I get to read a bunch of cool books about a bunch of cool subjects, and all the class content fascinates me.

On to the "Wow" report.

The other day on the bus I saw a very large man, I'm talking clinically obese, sitting in a motorized chair wearing a propeller ball cap. He had a Big Dogs shirt stretched over the back of the chair which had said Big Dog standing behind a bar, a pint of beer on either side of him. The shirt read "ATTITUDE SERVED HERE" in bold, black font. Busy with what, you may ask? Well, I've been working at the Ledding Library in Milwaukie, right near my house, for the past few weeks. I shelve things there, mainly. Books, CDs, VHS and DVDs, magazines, manga, you name it, I've put it in alphabetical order. I've been somewhat of a hero down there, as I've been going in on Sundays and Mondays. Sundays are the absolute busiest, most hectic days, and those are the ones where I end up shelving a whole cartload of DVDs. The carts for DVDs are pretty big. They come up to just past my waist and they're fairly long too. They have a divider splitting each shelf in two, making for two shelves on 2 layers. I usually take a full or almost full cart (Usually no more than 3 shelves) every day I go in, and in 20 minutes I have them organized by the first letter of the title. I must say, I love working there. It's my element, and I'd love to work there for money.

Time to change subjects abruptly.

Here's an interesting thing I ate yesterday. So I'm at a friend's birthday party, and we went to the Izakaya Kaiten sushi restaurant at Milikan Way in Beaverton. A kaiten for the record is the Japanese term for a sushi restaurant with a conveyor belt system around the table that you pull sushi off of and pay by the plate. While I was there I ate some damn good sushi, but there was one that was just unbeatably awesome. Bacon Sushi.

Bacon sushi is apparently cucumber with crab stick wrapped in bacon. Yeah, you heard that right, goddamn BACON. Now, bacon is one of the most excellent, tasty, and popular meats. I mean, they have Baconaise and bacon salt and bacon everything. But I never thought they'd make bacon sushi. And I never knew it would be so damn delicious.

Con Report:: Sakura Con

Greetings, my treasured readers. It's been quite some time.
Now that I'm free from the whirlwind that is school, I can update more frequently and better entertain your curiosity about what crazy things there are to see in the world.

On April 9th I set off for Seattle for Sakuracon, the Pacific Northwest's largest anime convention.

Why, Robot Collector, that's fascinating, what exactly IS an anime convention?"
This question may be fresh in many of your minds, so it is my duty to inform you all. An anime convention is a massive gathering for those who like Japanese animation, comics (referred to as manga from here on out), and video games. It's much like a scifi or comic convention, just a different sort of crowd. Anime conventions are some of the most fun events I've attended in my life, and for good reason. It's right within my element, and damn it, I love anime and all that it entails.
Typically at anime cons, one will "cosplay", a combination of costume and play that the Japanese use to describe dressing up as a character from a series or game. I myself went as Rorschach from Watchmen, and there are pictures, that will be uploaded later. In essence, the trip was a lot of fun, and for the outsider, it's a fantastic experience in people watching, as well as a crash course in the culture. It's hard to explain just what one will see, but in essence there's just one thing you'll notice: people bonding.

You see people getting along, people sharing the same interests, and you see for once that when you get a lot of folks who like the same thing together, they can peacefully coexist. Now this isn't to say that a convention is free from drama, or strife, or any of that. People are people, and as such, they are subject to the hardships and faults people deal with every day. But it's a damn fine way to get away from it all. It's nice to go to a con, make new friends, and just forget about the economy, or disasters, or even just the daily grind we all face every day. It makes you feel alive, and that's why I love it.

Until next time.

Adventures in Snack Smuggling

So I saw Watchmen today, which was quite good. It has its flaws, it's not for everyone, most definitely rated R, and overall a solid, enjoyable 8/10. I recommend the graphic novel more, but the movie's decent. Anyway, on to tonight's post.

Now, I enjoy going to theaters to see movies. Great for a hangout, lots of fun, more intense than a DVD rental, and all around a great experience. However, my main axe to grind with the theater is the price of concessions. Everyone knows what I'm talking about. You pay $7.50 or more for a ticket, which is already a considerable investment. Toss in popcorn, which is roughly 3-5 bucks, and a fountain drink for about the same, you just added almost 10 more dollars. This, my friends, is preposterous. Now, the most obvious solution here is to sneak your own concessions in. But how? Well, I'm answering that question right now.

Wear coats with deep pockets, preferably long coats. If you buy the right things, you can pack more into them. Don't get anything too awkwardly shaped. Empty popcorn and small, bite sized things into sandwich bags. Or, you can do what I did and go to an Asian market.

Asian markets are a lot of fun, as there's stuff you just can't find at your standard Safeway-type grocery. Aside from the strange new world of far Eastern foodstuffs, you can find a wealth of inexpensive, low profile concessions for your cinematic outing.

I myself spent roughly 6 dollars and got some candy, a few cookie-ish items, two small canned drinks, and a bottle of cola. This adds up to twice or thrice what I could afford at the theater's stand.

At Asian markets, a lot of the canned drinks like coffees, yogurt drinks, various fruit nectars and the like, run about 78-88 cents a pop. They're tasty, especially if you find the right ones, and more importantly, they're either short and no larger than a standard soda can, or they're taller and much more slender. I fit two of them along with the Hello Panda cookies in one pocket. In addition, a lot of Asian snack foods are packaged with much less bulk than American products, so your contraband can be stashed much easier and in greater numbers. When it comes to buying outside goodies, Asian groceries are a monument to efficiency, affordability, and deliciousness.

So there you have it. Go to Uwajimaya or Fubon, or your nearest Asian specialty grocery store and shell out 5 or 6 bucks and get a wide variety of easily concealed, perfectly tasty snacks. You'll be glad you didn't spend it on one bottled beverage and a package of Skittles.

Obamarama, etc.

First and foremost, our nation is looking a lot brighter. So Nerding Up The New Year was a lot of fun, and a happy belated New Year to you all. Nerding Up The New Year is a Milwaukie based gaming event put on by some good friends of mine from high school, and it's one hell of a blast. Lots of fun, cheap cover charge ($5), all around good time. I'll remind people later in the year about it. Check it out at http://nerding.org/

So, that aside, I've thrown yet another new feature onto the blog: I'll be doing some more reviews now and then, and will include film and game reviews, as well as possible anime reviews. These will be sporadic at best, and will give just a bit more insight into my world as it is. Mind you, the blog is disorganized as usual, but I've decided that my New Year's resolution is to increase my output of amusing, fascinating, and high quality posts on this blog. I shall recount past stories, updated ones, and things will be better. So get ready for new stuff.

Season's Greetings and a Tribute to Horn Guy

Happy holidays, folks. I've been enjoying the fantastic snowfall in the city of Portland for the past week, and I'm all geared up for the holiday season. At the moment I'm listening to Japanese Christmas music non-stop and playing GTA2 at the same time. Nothing says Christmas cheer like listening to a J-Pop cover of Last Christmas by Wam! or hearing some of my favorite anime casts singing Santa Claus Is Coming To Town while I light up gang members with a machine gun or blow up cars with a flame thrower. Sleigh bells ringing alongside blaring sirens and gunfire is something special, or at least rather hilarious. Anyway, you all deserve a present this year, so time for a very special post.

May I present to you all an ode to one of the most memorable characters from the most memorable film I've seen: Horn Guy from The Barbarians.

The Barbarians is a film starring the aptly named Barbarian Brothers, Dave and Peter Paul. It's an Italian directed film of generic sword and sorcery fare, but with two overmuscled, overmulleted comedy-action heroes (Who made the fantastic Double Trouble and Twin Sitters) in their film debut. It has some fantastic scenes in it, including bizarre barking by one of the brothers, but really, the best part of the movie is one character named Horn Guy.

Horn Guy's role as a villain is very minor. He's no different than Bearded Horseman #5 or Generic Armored Baddie #46. What makes him special is his facial expressions, which I shall show you. The following photos were painstakingly compiled by my cousin Ben to be put on display in this very blog. I attempted making several miniature snowmen, but the snow was a bit too dry, so I didn't manage it. I did, however, notice it was perfect for snowballs, so I made and threw some. Special note: Cars are fantastic for snow warfare, as they provide cover and a good supply of ammunition.

In any case, I had a lot of fun today, and I saw WALL-E, which is a great movie. While I have acquired a decent robot or two of MegaBlox origin, I absolutely couldn't pass up the dragons that I saw. I've gotten the ice one, the fire one, and the lightning one, and each one has a very solid design and four wings that fold around it like a shield, with a tail that folds on top. Sorry about the lack of posts, school got in the way. But with finals coming to a close tomorrow, I now have some free time.

Today I went to a McDonald's for the first time in about 6 or 7 years. I had "sworn off" McDonald's long before Supersize Me came out, but not for moral reasons, or for health reasons (though that was part of it). I stopped eating there because it didn't taste good. Yes, it's been a long time since I ate something from there, but today I decided to end my one sided feud, boycott, whatever I should call it. I bought a chicken sandwich, which was average, filling, not too horrible. The fries were good, that's always been their best merit to be honest. But the topic of this post is something that I want to add in as a feature of sorts to the blog: A new section called "Wow, did I just see that?".

I find certain people to be interesting or at least amusing, especially in places similar to those I've highlighted (K-Mart, The Bins, etc.). A lot of times, I see things that are either striking or absurd in some way. I saw something today in my brief time in the McDonald's establishment that was interesting enough to write about. A bedraggled mother in sweats with her two kids, who I had seen outside at the Redbox $1 DVD rental machine standing in line, snapping at her kids that "We're not getting Happy Meals today."

I was wondering just what the big picture is behind this. What other places the people frequent, things like that. Same thing goes for grocery stores, malls, things like that. I never think too deeply, but it is a topic of interest. So this shall mark the first People Watching Report of the Robot Collector history, with many others to follow.

The Bins

Everybody's heard of/been to a Goodwill store. When people think of second hand stores, they think of Goodwill first off, probably. However, the Goodwill just outside of Milwaukie is a different beast entirely. This, my friends, is The Bins.

Many of my readers will know what I mean, as you guys have all been with me to it numerous times. For those of you who haven't seen it, let me first give you a rundown on the history and layout that makes The Bins unique. Unlike most Goodwill stores, there are massive bins where everything is tossed into. Other than electronics and furniture sections, there is no organization. You pay by the pound for the most part, and you go through these huge troughs of used stuff, looking for whatever treasures catch your eye. The store is much larger than a standard one, and that's one of the big selling points of the Bins experience.

The kind of people who go there are, to be fair, usually average Goodwill customers. However, it's slightly different. They often bring extended gripping devices (or as I call them, grabbers) to rifle through the mounds to find what they want, they sift through the bins much more carefully, or they throw things around and act quite the opposite. Back at the old location, which was more cavelike, there was a back area that was roped off with jumper cables until a certain time. This was where the "good stuff" was. Likewise, the back saw many people camping out, waiting for the cables to be lifted so they could flood in and scavenge to their heart's content. Good times long gone, sadly, as there are no jumper cables at the new Bins. Still, the general experience is there.

I myself have gotten a few things from there, such as a Nerf Tech Target pistol in working condition that I have yet to get darts for, and I got a gift package from my cousins Paul and Tony containing a 1987 Bon Jovi shirt, a working Atari Super Pong machine, and a Paul Lekakis vinyl. Also, I got my computer chair from there for 5 dollars, a good deal, if slightly beaten up.

On my most recent trip to The Bins, I found something hilarious, interesting, and just a little unsettling. My brother and I were leaving, and he spotted $3 grab bags. Walking over, we picked some up and saw that they contained rather hazardous materials. Rusting aerosol cans, propane canisters, and pest control sprays. Looking at all this, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the best idea to be selling all this flammable (and possibly explosive) material for only 3 bucks in a plastic bag. To me, it seemed like a grab and go bomb kit, and needless to say, my brother and I had a good laugh at it.

Department Stores

I went to K Mart today with my cousin and his wife, and it was rather interesting to say the least. This isn't just about K Mart, rather it is about things I have gleaned from department stores all over. First off, let me reveal what I've noticed about such places. There's different levels of department stores.

First off, there's what I call high end stores. These are places like Macy's Sears, and JC Penny's, places that specialize in higher quality goods, mainly clothes and appliances, appliances moreso in Sears' case. Then you have your mid level, more broad stores like Target and Fred Meyer. These have a wider range of products, less focused on clothes and more focus on various other things like consumer electronics, various housewears, and in Fred Meyer's case, groceries. These places are generally pretty cool, but not terribly interesting. I enjoy going to such places to restock my Nerf arsenal, but I don't have any profound experiences there. However, I do find such things at what I call low end department stores.

These are places like Wal-Mart and K Mart and the like. Now they aren't low end because of the products necessarily, though these places don't have the best quality all the time. And it's not because of the selection, as Wal-Mart has done everything it can to sell absolutely everything. It's the feeling you get when you walk in. Wal-Mart isn't just cheap as far as prices go, it just feels cheap in there. There's a lack of energy that makes you want to explore, and I experienced the same thing in K Mart also. In Wal-Mart you get the feeling that you're in a looming, unpleasant place that just doesn't feel right. I don't dislike Wal-Mart solely because they are a potentially harmful corporate giant, that's for a different blog that isn't mine. I dislike it because it feels like a depressing place. Its denizens are numerous, from average folks to the elderly, along with large families and horrendously large people. I may have a followup post to this once I fully explore Wal-Mart.

The K Mart that I went to had a similar feel to it, but it felt barren to me. Not many people were inside, and it felt like it had been abandoned, though it was clearly well stocked. The prices were fair, standard, I did browse through the toy section, but I didn't find any robots to collect aside from an expensive (and awesome) Lego Exo-Force set. Think of it as Lego cashing in on anime, I'll explain some other time. Anyway, the cream of the crop in this K Mart was the snack stand. It's not too terribly unusual to see a concessions area in a store. Target has one, after all. But the snack stand in this particular K Mart felt just as wrong as the rest of the store. It was closed, as it was somewhat late, but it looked dark and empty. The prepackaged nachos and uninviting cases gave the impression that it had been closed for a long time and nobody thought to clean it out, like an old ghost town of an amusement park. Needless to say, even if it was open I probably wouldn't ever want to eat anything that came out of it. I only wish I got a picture of it.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience, and I do believe I need to hit Wal-Mart next. That should yield similar results, but not identical.

Introducing...

My name's Connor Healy. I'm 20 years old, and I live in the grand metropolis of Portland, Oregon. I'm a college student majoring in Japanese and minoring in Asian Studies, though that's not fully concrete yet. I mean, in the first two years, what is? I come from a good family in a good town that's getting better each day. Should be obvious that I'm an optimist by now.

I have a lot of interests, and they are all different. I'm a fan of Japanese animation and comics, put simply as anime and manga respectively, though I enjoy comics and graphic novels of Western origin just as much. I'm a fan of video and computer games as well, but I never go to tournaments or LANs or anything. I'm not devoted enough for that. I play World of Warcraft, but not very much. I like good books, good music, good art, and good films. Right now I'm actually watching Lord of War with my cousins and cousin in law. I like good food as well, and I'm big on finding good restaurants in whatever area I'm in.

The name of this blog is Robot Collector, because that's one of my hobbies. I collect robots. I like them, I like how they look, I enjoy the idea of a living machine, and they just seem cool. I'm not a regular collector, though. I don't leave it on a shelf in a perfect box, leaving it to collect dust and be nothing more than a knick-nack on the mantle. No, I bust that thing out of the box and play with it. I collected all 4 robots in the MARS toy line, and they're the best. These dandy little toys were picked up at the Walgreens near my home for about 6 dollars each, and although they were cheap, they aren't built cheap. None of them have broken at all, and the batteries on one of them have worn out simply because of good use. The robots can walk if you turn on a switch on the back of one of their shoulders or by holding down a button on their chest. The robots each come with three guns, able to hold one and mount the other two on pegs above the shoulders. The nice thing is that they all have at least one or two guns that the others don't have. They all have different arms, too, well 3 of the 4 do. One has a drill arm, two have a multi-barreled cannon/missile launcher arm, and one has a gripping claw with a button to push to make it grab things. The drill hand one is probably my favorite, and I bought two of them. They have different color schemes, different enough to seem like different toys. One's blue and one's dark green. Anyway, these are solid, and I really love 'em. I should get more.
This here is why the blog's name is Robot Collector: It's who I am and what I do.

But the blog isn't limited to robots and toy shopping at Walgreens. It's everything that I find, see, buy, or do. It's not a Livejournal or anything like that. This blog is about me and everything in my world. This is more than an update, it's all sorts of things. The only thing that it really is for certain is a blog. What you're reading, what I'm typing, what's displayed on this page is a part of me that's being put out to experiment with on the web. It's an exploration and a journey. But it's nothing complex, not a big memoir, or a politically charged rant page. At this point, it's a blog that I'm writing, and that's all that I can tell you now.
